Product Review – An App to help keep out of controlled airspace and no-fly zones

August 3, 2014

There has been a lot of publicity lately about multirotors and other UAVs entering prohibited airspace or being seen on approach paths and in restricted areas – could this app help?

http://www.pocketfms.com/airspaceavoid/ AirspaceAvoid from PocketFMS is a tool designed for light aircraft pilots that I think could be very helpful to multirotor pilots. Free in the UK (approved by NATS / CAA for flight safety enhancement), paid for for other territories, this app shows you where you air and what airspace is near you, including restricted/prohibited areas and controlled airspace. It can also plot NOTAMS (or Notices to Airmen) that show graphically if you are near to a temporary restriction, perhaps due to a major police incident, sporting event, parachute jumping, etc. Definitely something to pick up if you’re a UK flyer (it’s free) and might be worth a look if you are elsewhere and want to stay away from restricted/controlled/prohibited airspace.

My “On the Kitchen Table” videos are mainly aimed at newcomers to multirotors, quadcopters, drones and UAVs, particularly to the DJI product range, and the Phantom line in particular. I have how to’s, product reviews, tips, tricks, hints and information for beginners and those in the early stages of the hobby. I film “on the kitchen table” to show people that, like me, you don’t need a workshop and an array of specialist equipment and years of experience to get started and progress with flying these amazing aircraft and enjoying making great aerial videos and stills. So if you have bought, or are thinking of buying, a DJI Phantom, Phantom FC40, Phantom 2, Phantom 2 Vision or Vision+ or Plus, or even building your own DJI Flamewheel F450 or F550, we can do it… on the kitchen table!
